Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my hospital CD have eFilmLite.exe, Weasis, or Sectra that will not open on my Mac?

Hospitals bundle legacy Windows executables (like eFilmLite.exe, Philips DICOM Viewer, Sectra, or Carestream) or Java launchers (like Weasis) onto patient CDs. Modern macOS (Apple Silicon M1/M2/M3/M4) blocks 32-bit Windows .exe files and unsigned Java apps. However, the actual CT, MRI, or X-ray scans sit in the DICOM folder on the same disc and open directly in MedSlice.

Is MedSlice a free browser alternative to Weasis, Horos, and OsiriX?

Yes. While Horos and OsiriX require multi-gigabyte macOS installations and Weasis requires a local Java Runtime, MedSlice runs instantly in Safari, Chrome, Edge, or Firefox via WebAssembly with zero installation.

Where are the actual medical images located on an eFilm or Carestream hospital CD?

Open the CD or USB in Finder/Explorer and look for a file named DICOMDIR or folders named DICOM, IMAGES, EXPORT, or PT000000. Drag that entire folder onto MedSlice and it will automatically index all series.

Are my hospital CD scans uploaded to the cloud?

Never. MedSlice decodes all DICOM slices locally inside your browser’s memory. Your medical records never leave your computer.
